Advice for Approaching the Common Application COVID-19 Question

By Beth McKenzie

Tulane University recently published a short article on their Admission’s Blog introducing the COVID-19 question that will appear in the Common Application and providing some useful tips for contextualizing and approaching this topic.

The Common Application COVID-19 will be limited to a 250-word count and will be presented in the Additional Information section. Here is how the question will read:

Community disruptions such as COVID-19 and natural disasters can have deep and long-lasting impacts. If you need it, this space is yours to describe those impacts. Colleges care about the effects on your health and well-being, safety, family circumstance, future plans, and education, including access to reliable technology and quiet study spaces.

The question will be optional, and not all students should feel that they need to answer this question in their application. Students should be aware that all applicants have been impacted by COVID in some way that has required them to shift their academic and extracurricular agendas. Therefore, students should be self-aware of the challenges and struggles they have faced and try to determine whether their particular situation merits a specific explanation. Students should also try to remember the scope of this pandemic and to recognize that certain populations, particularly low-income and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), have been disproportionately affected and negatively impacted.

If a student chooses to answer the question, they should be aware that their answers will be analyzed both for content, that is the explanation of the details of their circumstances, and for the underlying tone of that explanation. If students choose to write about their academic, social, or emotional challenges that results from COVID-19 they should aim to be honest, candid and

concise. Students should try to focus on providing unemotional answers that are explaining rather than complaining.

The article explores a few areas of student life that might merit an explanation and gives specific examples for each category. For example, the article starts by addressing academic performance and the transcript record. If a student has experienced hardships that have significantly negatively impacted their academic performance, an explanation of this portion of the transcript might be necessary. Additionally, specific familial issues that caused genuine strife, rather than just inconvenience and annoyance, are also discussed. Unreliable internet access, loss of parental employment, and challenging demands for the children of healthcare workers were all cited as possible examples of topics that would potentially be worth elucidating.
